Feet of Clay

Book 12/2020: Terry Pratchett, Feet of Clay

Another audiobook of a discworld novel, this time read by Nigel Planer, Feet of Clay is the third of the Watch novels. The first one introduced Carrot to the core group of Vimes, Colon and Nobby. In the next book (Men At Arms), the watch diversified, i.e. it was joined by more non-human and non-male people. In this book, the latest addition is Cheery Littlebottom, a dwarf who wants to explore alls the ways of expressing individuality and personal identity.

As in all the Watch novels, murders occur. Also, the Patrician is under attack, this time via poison, the source of which turns out to be really hard to find. Also, ever since Vimes has married the richest heiress in Ankh-Morpork, he is in a bit of an identity crisis, given that everyone sees him as a lord (or at least a wanna-be lord), while he himself still feels like a commoner. People treat him differently, either with deference or contempt, and he doesn't get to "belong" to any of these groups. Sybil doesn't appear herself in this novel (or maybe I missed her), but as supportive and loving a wife as she is, she really can't help him navigate through his own sense of self.

My audiobook didn't have the best quality, but I really enjoyed Planer's voices, especially his intonation of the vampire Dragon King of Arms.

There are several more audiobooks on my desktop right now, but I hope the next book I'm posting here will be of the paper variety.
