Monstrous Regiment

Book 11/2020: Terry Pratchett, Monstrous Regiment

This audiobook was longer than I expected - 10 CDs with over 10 hours of material. Monstrous Regiment is a standalone novel, so maybe Pratchett poured that much more story into it, took his time to flash out the characters and give the readers a complex setting by exploring the history and culture of Borogravia.

This is a story mainly told from the perspective of a girl named Polly Perks, who disguises herself as a boy in order to join the Borogravian army and save her brother Paul, who has gone missing. She names herself Oliver, because the song "Sweet Polly Oliver" apparently also exists in Discworld, and even in the very sealed-off country of Borogravia. Once there, she finds out that she's not alone in her disguise.

While Polly remains focused on her main goal (finding her brother), she soon discovers that there is more at stake, on a level that will shake Borogravia's core values to the, pun intended, core.

Monstrous Regiment is a really good book, and I honestly don't know why I haven't read it a second time yet, like I did with the books about the watch and the witches. I'm definitely glad to have the audio book because Stephen Briggs is killing it. Honestly, don't miss out on that one.
